Are there any months that generally have lower or higher amounts of web traffic/engagement? All things considered, August seems a little slow.

Christmas tree sites tend to do better in the winter.

Summer is usually slow for most businesses. Also, you can check the trends of certain keywords using Google's Insight Tool.

I can confirm this- it's not just an internet thing- you'll find the same phenomena in brick and mortar businesses. It's summer- people are on vacation, they're moving, getting their kids ready for school, yadda yadda. Look for things to pick in October/November.
Black Friday is supposedly the day when most businesses start to turn a profit for the year. This should speak volumes by itself.

Depends on your website's niche. I was running a website about Holidays abroad from UK, and it was doing ok every month, just put trendy articles relevant to your niche ;)
